Our second game of the season seen the Mighty u13s travel to Oadby Wyggs. An unfamiliar foe for most and when we arrived, realising it’s Leicester Tigers training facility there was a little apprehension amongst the boys if truth be told.
We had the honor of their 1st team pitch an when we emerged from changing rooms we were met with what looked like a well drilled opposition with some big lads in their pack.
Both teams were well supported and once our trusty cameraman Graham was set up on his very own podium above the decent sized crowd the match kicked off, after teams observed a very well respected minute of silence in remembrance of the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth 11..
Oadby received kick off and utilised one of their forwards with a decent run into contact, followed by a couple more similar phases. The Mighty u13s noticed this pattern and started to fan out, leaving the previous ruck with minimal competitors but stopping their momentum at source with some willing and well prepared tacklers closing the ground on the next inevitable charge. As a result they soon started knocking ball carriers backwards which led to turn over at the next ruck.
Unfortunately for Oadby they didn’t seem to enjoy the contact as much without ball in hand and after a fair dent was made in their defense by Ben, some nice hands from Morgan and Orlando seen Dan register our first try.
Oadby opted to receive the kick off, so Zak put a good drop kick deep into their half which we recovered thanks to a strong chase from Will. A couple of decent carries into their 22 by Reuben, then Ben seen Oadby back tracking when they conceded a scrum.
The mighty u13s first ever competitive scrum looked fantastic as we marched a much bigger pack backward only to be penalised for pushing too far. We’ve got to work on that!
We soon retrieved the ball however and some strong forward play seen Morgan go over the whitewash.
Oadby again elected to receive and were quickly tackled and counter rucked to lead to our third try scored by Will.
Tries four and five were both barnstorming solo efforts from Henry, one of which was a pick and go from the half way line and took half of Oadby with him.
Our hosts now chose to kick to us on the restart.
The kick was gathered first time by Ben who ran straight back beating 3, he offloaded to Reuben who beat another 3 and then some silky hands from Ollie and Dan put Will in for his second.
Some notable tackling from Ollie, Alex and Jacob as well as some brave diving on the resulting loose balls by Jermaine allowed us to score 2 more good tries for Zak and Ben.
Half time 0-40.
The second half picked up where we left off.
Donny gathered the kick off, we rucked out our newly motivated hosts before Henry set off through the middle leaving opposing players in his wake then offloaded to a sprinting Orlando who finished off nicely.
Oadby put up a fight, even a little too much fight in places but after Orlando unselfishly put Will in for his hatrick, Ben got his his 3rd and Dec helped himself to a brace of tries the referee, probably rightly, blew up for full time ten minutes early.
Everyone of the u13s should be very proud of their performance as their perfect start to the season rolls on.
Full time Broadstreet win 0-65.
